			<title>Trent Cotchin kicks off AFL Victoria Herald Sun Shield</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[The 2013 AFL Victoria Herald Sun Shield competition will commence in July, engaging over 170 secondary schools and almost 4500 students throughout Victoria.<br />&nbsp;<br />AFL Victoria general manager Grant Williams, Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and Herald Sun Shield captains officially launched the 2013 competition at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday, May 15.<br />&nbsp;<br />Now in its 37th year, the Herald Sun Shield involves four levels of competition:<br />&nbsp;<br />AFL Victoria Herald Sun Shield<br />AFL Victoria Herald Sun Country Shield<br />AFL Victoria Herald Sun Country Cup<br />AFL Victoria Herald Sun Senior Girls Shield
Trent Cotchin, who was recently appointed as the Coles AFL Schools Ambassador, played for Penleigh Essendon Grammar in the 2006 and 2007 AFL Victoria Herald Sun Shield.
“I have many fond memories of playing the Herald Sun Shield when I was at school and it was a great competition for my football development.”
Other AFL stars that have competed in the Herald Sun Shield competitions include Marc Murphy, Luke Dalhaus and Drew Petrie.<br />Last year, St Patricks, Ballarat won their fifth Herald Sun Shield title with the game played at the MCG. Ballarat Clarendon College won the Herald Sun Country Shield title, Hallam Senior Secondary College were premiers of the Herald Sun Senior Girls Competition with Geelong’s Sacred Heart College winning pool B of the Competition.<br />&nbsp;<br />AFL Victoria general manager Grant Williams said the competition provides players the opportunity to represent their schools, test their skills against their peers from other schools and play on the iconic MCG.<br />&nbsp;<br />“Over the years thousands of players have been involved in the battle for the Shield, and it is a great reward for teams to be able to play the grand final matches on the hallowed turf of the MCG.<br />&nbsp;<br />“For many players it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to play at the MCG, but for others - as we have seen in the past - it is the first of many games as they follow the talent pathway through to become AFL footballers like Cotchin, Murphy, Petrie and Dalhaus have done,” Williams said.<br />&nbsp;<br />“AFL Victoria is very grateful for the ongoing support of this competition provided by the MCC and the Herald Sun.”]]></content:encoded>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[The AFL is encouraging teachers to register for this fun national competition to test students’ Australian Football knowledge while developing their literacy, numeracy and IT skills.<br /><br />The 2013 AFL Quiz is open to all students from years 3-6. Commencing May 20, the competition consists of a qualifying quiz of three competitive rounds, concluding with an exclusive final series.<br /><br />Teams of three students have one hour to answer 10 questions and be in the running to win exciting prizes, including tickets to attend an AFL match.<br />&nbsp;<br />Coles AFL Schools ambassador and Richmond captain Trent Cotchin is calling on teachers to register their students.<br />&nbsp;<br />“Now is the time to register for the AFL Quiz, an exciting and educational competition that will put your AFL knowledge to the test.”<br /><br />Hundreds of teachers throughout Australia integrate the AFL Quiz into their learning programs. Questions that have been developed are linked to the new National Curriculum and compliment current NAPLAN testing programs. The Western Australian Football Commission and School Sport WA have worked in close partnership for 25 years to deliver a quality competition and have continued the cooperative links between schools and the community.<br />&nbsp;<br />This year’s program promises to be even bigger than 2012 with a number of new schools on board chasing the title of “AFL SPORTSREADY CUP Champions across three divisions. Can Clontarf Aboriginal College claim back to back Cable Division flags? Who will emerge as Jakovich Division Premiers and can Albany SHS claim a fourth straight title in the Billy Walker Division?<br />&nbsp;<br />One feature of the AFL SportsReady Cup program has been the opportunity to name patrons for our competition divisions. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[The AFL is pleased to announce Trent Cotchin, captain of the Richmond Football Club, has been appointed to the new role of Coles AFL Schools Program Ambassador.<br />&nbsp;<br />Trent said he is looking forward to being involved in the Coles AFL Schools program, an AFL initiative that aims to resource and recognise school teachers and support students to be involved in Australian Football across the country.<br />&nbsp;<br />“The school system is an integral element in providing an opportunity for all students, girls and boys, to participate in Australia’s game, AFL, which has the power to develop not just physical skills but social and educational outcomes.<br />&nbsp;<br />“I have many fond memories playing AFL during my schooling and enjoyed being a part of the various interschool football competitions.<br />&nbsp;<br />“My sister is a primary school teacher and I respect the positive impact that teachers can have on students.”<br />&nbsp;<br />In 2012 there were over 5,600 Coles AFL School Ambassadors. The AFL is aiming to have one Coles AFL School Ambassador in every school in Australia.
Trent attended Reservoir West Primary school, followed by Parade College and Penleigh Essendon Grammar.
<br />Making his debut in 2008 with Richmond Football Club, Trent has established himself amongst the top echelon of midfielders in the game.
Last year, Trent had a brilliant season which saw him take out the best and fairest for the second successive year. He was also named on the wing in the All-Australian team. He led the club in kicks (372) and disposals (606). Trent was appointed captain after Chris Newman stepped down in 2012.
In 2012 334,712 students participated in primary and secondary school competitions and programs greater than six weeks in duration. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[Coles AFL School Ambassadors from all around South Australia were given the opportunity to attend the free AFL School Ambassador 2013 Launch. The event, held at AAMI Stadium, was a pre match function to the Adelaide Crows vs Carlton Blues Round 3 NAB Cup match.<br /><br />Attending AFL School Ambassadors were provided with free tickets to watch the AFL pre-season clash and saw a breathtaking game with the Adelaide Crows winning by 3 points.<br /><br />The group was welcomed by Coles State General Manager SA/NT - Vito Borrello.<br /><br />The highlight of the night for AFL School Ambassadors was hearing from the events guest speaker, two time AFL Premiership Captain and current Adelaide FC Assistant Coach Mark Bickley. Mark spoke to the group about the current Adelaide FC playing group, the 2013 season, Adelaide FC former Head Coaches and the glory days of the 1997 and 1998 AFL Premierships.<br /><br />The Launch event also included presentations from AFL Schools and Education Manager Mark Riddiford, an interview with 2012 South Australian Secondary Schools AFL School Ambassador Of The Year Craig Johncock.]]></content:encoded>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[The Coal River Football Program was launched on Thursday March 7. The new initiative which will be delivered by the Clarence Football Club sees four schools from the regional district come together for skill development and match play sessions over an eight week period.<br />&nbsp;<br />For the four primary schools involved; Richmond Primary School, Campania District School, Cambridge Primary School and St Johns School Richmond.&nbsp; It is the first organised regional football program they have been involved in.<br />&nbsp;<br />The program will be administered by the Clarence Football Club and the Richmond Junior Football Club with the assistance of physical education staff from the schools involved.<br />&nbsp;<br />AFL Tasmania and Coles have provided additional support for the initiative by making a pool of jumpers created from the Coles AFL schools program jumper subsidies available to the schools involved.<br />&nbsp;<br />Coles Regional Manager for Tasmania Shawn Haverland said: “As part of our national sponsorship of school football through the AFL we see initiatives such as this as very important.<br /><br />“We are pleased to see our support resulting in the development of football at the local level within schools”.]]></content:encoded>
