Respect: Spreading the Word campaign continues with focus on volunteers

The second video of the AFL's Respect: Spreading the Word campaign focuses on the importance of volunteering to Australian football.
Football celebrities such as Jim Stynes, Chris Johnson and Ron Barassi talk about the valuable contribution volunteers make to the game each week across the country.
The video features volunteers from Avondale Heights and Taylors Lakes Football Clubs building a "Respect" banner for the Essendon District Football Leagues senior’s game played on 16th April 2011.
The volunteers received help from the Western Bulldogs cheer squad. The two community football teams ran through the banner together at the start of the match.
Club administrators are encouraged to <link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcTZYPhONPY _blank external-link-new-window "Opens external link in new window">download the video from Youtube
and post it on their sites.

Volunteering Conference

The 13th National Conference on Volunteering is being held in Melbourne from 27-29 October.

The 13th National Conference on Volunteering is being held at the Sebel and Citigate Albert Park, Melbourne from 27-29 October 2010.
The conference, organised by Volunteering Australia, provides an opportunity to debate and exchange ideas and information on the issues that impact the more than 5.4 million Australians who volunteer each year.
Challenges such as the impacts of an ageing population and the global financial crisis continue to be areas of discussion within volunteer industries.
The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Initiate. Discover. Examine.’ which offers the opportunity to explore current and emerging trends in volunteering.

Initiate discussion, debate and analyse issues affecting volunteering

Discover new technologies that can affect or support volunteering

Examine initiatives that will grow volunteering and promote best practice in volunteering

The opportunity to participate in Australian Football is largely provided by the efforts of an estimated 120,000 volunteer coaches, administrators and umpires.
This conference will explore the way we currently engage with volunteers, and to discuss and debate future trends and developments in volunteering. Given that football clubs are built on the efforts of volunteers it is important that club presidents and committees understand the best ways to engage with volunteers.
For more information on the conference visit the
.

Daryl Lovegrove is one of the seven volunteers to be named as a 2010 State Volunteer of the Year.
Over 120,000 volunteers help service Australian Football at all levels and the Australian Football League are forever grateful for the sacrifices Daryl and other volunteers make to continue supporting the game.
The 2010 State Volunteers of the Year winners are rewarded with a trip of a lifetime to the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final. The trip includes:

Two return airfares to Melbourne (except Victoria)

Three nights’ accommodation at the Sofitel Melbourne (including breakfast)

Two tickets to the AFL Official Function at the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final

The opportunity to walk in the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade

The opportunity to attend a morning tea in the AFL Media Centre with several AFL identities to discuss issues being faced within community football.

Daryl Lovegrove’s Volunteer Profile
Daryl (Scratch) Lovegrove has been an active member of the Cleve Football Club and Eastern Eyre Football League (previously County Jervois) for over 30 years.
Daryl’s service includes:
Cleve Football Club

Executive Committee Member

Club Secretary

Treasurer

Umpires Coordinator

Club Records Officer

1995 – Life Membership

Eastern Eyre FL

League Recorder

Clearance Secretary

Footy Web Manager/Trainer for League and Clubs

League Umpire

Local Newspaper Correspondent

Week in the life of Daryl Lovegrove:
Daryl’s week begins with the entry of all League results from Junior Colts to A Grade into the Footy Web system. He then manages any clearance transfers throughout the week which results in many follow up calls to assist clubs process clearances.
Daryl will also spend time during the week compiling a report on the local games for the regional paper, a highlight for many come Thursday morning as Daryl’s wit adds to the accurate description of events that took place. ‘Scratch on Sport’ was a long running insert that highlighted the often comical nature of country sport.
Thursday evening is busy organising all umpires for Saturday’s games along with other rostered positions that need to be filled to ensure all roles are covered during a busy day of Football and Netball on the Saturday.
After an often hectic Friday evening processing late clearances, permits or registrations, Daryl will be up early Saturday to open and man the gate at the local Cleve games. When finished on the gate he will then Umpire either the Senior Colts or B Grade Football (has umpired both at times) followed by Boundary Umpire for the A Grade Football. At the end of the day Daryl will often be found manning the bar.
Recent events:
Recently Daryl’s organisational skills were put to the test as 120km/hr winds on a Friday evening removed part of the Cleve Club roof over the Kitchen. Daryl was made aware of the incident at 6:30am on Saturday morning of which a home game was to be played at the Cleve sporting grounds that day. Within 2 hours Daryl was able to move the game to rivalling Rudall Oval.

Maureen Gathercole is one of the seven volunteers to be named as a 2010 State Volunteer of the Year.
Over 120,000 volunteers help service Australian Football at all levels and the Australian Football League are forever grateful for the sacrifices Maureen and other volunteers make to continue supporting the game.
The 2010 State Volunteers of the Year winners were rewarded with a trip of a lifetime to the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final. The trip included:

Maureen had a great time in Melbourne and offered the following when asked about her weekend.
"I had an amazing weekend. Our room at the Sofitel looked right across to the MCG and we spent much of our little spare time admiring the view. Then David Parkin, who is a friend of a Past East Fremantle President made some very pleasing remarks about some of the work I am doing, then the Parade and so many East Fremantle people in the crowd. However the trip was made all the more special when we discovered we were to be joined (at the AFL Official Function at the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final) by Ron Barassi, Bob Skilton, Wayne Bradshaw and the McHales."
Maureen Gathercole’s Volunteer Profile
Maureen Gathercole simply does everything ... and even that is underestimating the role that she plays at the East Fremantle Football Club. If there was a Hall of Fame for Volunteers then Maureen would be one of the first inducted and then elevated to Legend Status. Maureen has volunteered her services, time, expertise and caring nature to the club for 30 years.
East Fremantle Football Club (2010)

Editor of the Shark Attack Members Magazine
(4 per year - a massive task on its own)

Coordinates food for players during and after games (including hamburgers, lollies, fruit and sandwiches, etc)

Assists in the property room

Fills in for the office staff when required

Prepares soup for all the players after training nights

Official club historian
(assists the WAFC and WAFL in their History requests)

Coordinated the "All Time Player Recognition Day"

Sewing and repair work on all the jumpers
(including sewing on all the numbers and sponsors badges)

Assists with property requirements for all away games

Assists the coaches in the preperation of game day stats

Counsel and guidance to all staff, players and other volunteers

Other Roles Undertaken

School Ambassador

Canteen

Club Equipment Coordinator

Maureen has a great sense of humour, a real passion and enthusiasm for the club and simply loves football and is always prepared to dig in and help out someone in need at the club. She is one of the MOST important people at the East Fremantle Football Club and District.
