Youth Girls Nationals a Great Success

Thursday, May 15, 2014

The fifth AFL Youth Girls Championships proved to be a chilly but exhilarating week of football. Played at the new Gungahlin Enclosed Oval in ACT, the carnival kicked off with four close games on day 1 with a draw and one point the difference in Pool B, whilst Pool A provided five point and 10 point ball games. With Woomeras and Thunder Devils (NT and Tas combined) joining the Championships for the first time and well known outstanding coaches, such as Queensland’s Craig Starcevich and Woomeras Chris Johnson leading their teams the enthusiasm levels soared.

Western Australia finally broke the Vic Metro hoodoo comfortably winning the title in Pool A. Hayley Miller was Best on Ground in the Grand Final to add to her All Australian honours. Leading Goalscorer, with a new record haul of 15 goals, Asha Price was also All Australian. Eventual winners in Pool B, the Woomeras, were ecstatic with their first up victory. NSW/ACT were the big improvers of the Champs by winning their first two games and playing off in the Grand Final in Pool B.
