Online map highlights Indigenous players around the country

The AFL Players' Association has launched the first ever Interactive Indigenous Players' Map to highlight the cultural diversity amongst Indigenous players.

Featuring 79 current players from 41 language and/or cultural groups in Australia, the map aims to inform and educate the football community and wider public on the various language and cultural groups of Indigenous AFL players.
Adam Goodes, AFL Players’ Indigenous Advisory Board Chairman said, "Indigenous players represent a diverse range of language groups across the country. The different language groups each have their own distinct traditions and culture and can differ greatly between each group.
"The Indigenous Advisory Board worked together with the Players’ Association on the concept of the map, and we are thrilled to see it brought to life to celebrate Indigenous Round and the contribution of Indigenous players to the game.
"The map profiles each of our countries – not necessarily where we were recruited from, but where our families originate from. It is important for us to share our stories and where we come from with each other, and the interactive map is a way of sharing this with the wider community."
Interactive Indigenous Player Map Facts:

There were once over 250 known language groups across Australia

Each language group has its own distinct culture and traditions

There are currently 79 Indigenous players on AFL lists

In 2012, Indigenous Players represent 41 language and/or cultural groups

Cultural groups are a collective of language groups who have a common cultural identity

The largest cluster of players is in the Noongar (Southwest Region of WA) cultural group with 33 players originating specifically from here

The AFL Players’ Association Indigenous Advisory Board is the first of its kind in Australian sport, and was established by players to continue to improve the AFL landscape for Indigenous players

The Advisory Board liaises directly with the Players’ Association to provide guidance on the development of the programs and support services which directly relate to Indigenous players within the AFL

Clarification on Sliding Rules

Football Operations GM, Adrian Anderson clarifies the AFL rules on sliding

Adrian Anderson, GM, AFL Football Operations
The Match Review Panel and Tribunal have recently made decisions in regards to players sliding knees or feet first into a contest and making contact with an opponent.
This practice has emerged recently and is increasing in prevalence.
In light of medical advice received that this is an extremely dangerous mechanism of injury and should be prohibited, the AFL Football Operations Department would like to further clarify how this action will be interpreted.
Background
The 2012 Laws DVD which was presented to all AFL clubs earlier this year, referred to "the tactic of sliding into a contest" and stated:

Emerging dangerous tactic

Potential to cause serious injury

Free kick will be awarded

May be referred to the Match Review Panel

In addition, the memo circulated by me on Friday 27 April provided clear information about what is prohibited when a player elects to slide into a contest:
"The action of sliding itself is not prohibited. However, players have a duty of care not to slide where it is reasonably foreseeable that this may cause injury to others. In particular players risk offending under the rough conduct rule if they slide: Feet or knees first where they should know contact to an opponent could result; or Late into a contest and with force (regardless of whether it is feet/knees first or not)."
In addition, Law 15.4.5(a)(ii) already states a prohibited contact free kick can be paid for making contact with an opposition player below the knees.
Umpires will pay free kicks in relation to sliding
AFL umpires have been instructed to fully enforce existing rules by paying free kicks against players who slide into contests feet or knees first or late when contact to an opponent occurs. Please note free kicks will be paid for feet/knees first contact even where the offending player is first to the ball (e.g Thomas or Broughton examples).
We are taking this action after consulting with the AFL Medical Directors and AFL Medical Officers Association who have shared with us their concerns about the practice of sliding into a contest (particularly feet or knees first), whether a player does so in the act of gaining possession or not.
Amendments to Laws in relation to sliding may be pursued
It is clear that under our present rules, sliding incidents involving Thomas and Broughton (while free kicks) are not considered Reportable Offences by the AFL Tribunal.
We will be monitoring and considering if formal amendments to the Tribunal Guidelines, Player Rules or Laws of the Game are warranted to address this issue. This will be done in consultation with the Laws of the Game Committee and Clubs.
As part of this process, we will continue to monitor the tactic of sliding and the player response on field to the enforcement of free kicks.

SA 8.5 (53) def VIC DEV 1.6 (7)
After their drubbing at the hands of Victoria on the first day of the U18 AFL Youth Girls National Championships in Adelaide, it would have been easy for the SA players to pack in the competition.
Instead they gave AFL Vic Development a football lesson in team work and one percenters.
A feature of the SA game was their blocking allowing a ball carrier to break through the lines and surge into SA’s forward 50.
SA had six goals on the board in quick succession before Vic Dev could rally and get into some semblance of cohesive ball movement.
Caitlin Swanson and NT Thunder player, Shannon Ponter were in fine form for SA while Tassie import, Maddie Smith for Development again worked hard in the packs.
The brilliant Autumn sunshine allowed for crisp ball handling and some outstanding overhead marking.

WA Succumb to Dominant VIC

WA clawed back in a determined second half, but title holders too good

VIC 6.4 (40) def WA 3.5 (23)
The current title holders were outscored in the second half by a determined Team WA in the second match of day 2 of the U18 Youth Girls National Championships in Adelaide.
However, Victoria are a force to be reckoned with.
A torrid first quarter full of brutal tackles from WA and good transition into their forward line by Victoria were outstanding features.
A vocal crowd spurred on the umpires to reward the tackling from WA and were appreciative of the wonderful marking and long kicking ability of the Vics. In particular Michaela Perceval repelled numerous WA attacks and ran well off the half back to provide her onballers with plenty of the ball.
WA found no reward, however, as the Vics piled on four goals in their first half keeping Team WA scoreless.
A different picture emerged after the long break.
Through brilliant running ruck work of Emma Swanson, WA started to gain the ascendancy in the middle.
Raking long kicks to the WA forwards produced two quick goals. Victoria's captain, Madeline Keryk was inspirational thwarting many WA moves into their 50.
By the end of the game, WA had clawed their way back to come away with a respectable 17 point defeat.
If the two teams make it to the Grand Final it should be a cracking game!

QLD too good for NSW/ACT

NSW/ACT dominated by hard-running Queensland in day 2 of the U18 Youth Girls National Champs

NSW/ACT 0.1 (1) def by QLD 13.12 (90)
After a game that eluded them because they ran out of legs on Tuesday, Queensland made sure they were full of running when they outplayed a plucky NSW/ACT.
In the first match of Day 2 of the U18 AFL Youth Girl National Championships, Queensland burst out of the centre square to peg a quick opening goal through hard work by Megan Hunt.
Clean ball handling and strong running was the feature of their game for all four quarters.
Despite strong overhead marking and numerous attempts to push into their forward line NSW/ACT could not convert. The longer the game went the NSW/ACT girls fell prey to some excellent bumps from the opposition and at times friendly fire that resulted in some injuries to key players.
Queensland’s Caitlin Collins played out of her skin driving her team forward frequently and was well supported by Emily Bates and Megan Hunt.
Final scores
NSW/ACT 0.1 (1) def by QLD 13.12 (90)
Quarter-by-quarter
QLD: 1.3 (9), 4.5 (29), 8.9 (57), 13.12 (90)
NSW/ACT: 0.1 (1), 0.1 (1), 0.1 (1), 0.1 (1)

Vic Dev Fight Hard for First Win

AFL Vic Dev snatch win from tenacious NSW/ACT

AFL Vic Dev 4.5 (29) def NSW/ACT 2.4 (16)
The last quarter was the difference between the two teams.
In day one of the U18 Youth Girls National Championships, AFL Vic Dev kicked two quick goals in the dying minutes of the quarter to snatch a hard-won victory.
NSW/ACT have finished 6th at the previous two U18 Youth Girls National Championships but today's game showed they have improved markedly.
In what was a very entertaining game to finish the first day’s play of the Championships, non-traditional football state NSW/ACT played a free flowing, vigorous game against AFL Victoria Development.
In past Champs these two teams have played off for 5th and 6th but their calibre of play was so high that if the other teams take either team for granted they will do so at their peril.
Tasmanian Maddison Smith is able to play for AFL Vic Dev until such time as Tasmania can field their own U18s team. She was dominant in the midfield in particular continually driving her team forward.
Second timer Gabbie Pound was a hard worker for NSW/ACT going in hard in packs to serve the ball out to her onballers.
Final scores
AFL Vic Dev 4.5 (29) def NSW/ACT 2.4 (16)

Quarter-by-quarter
AFL Vic Dev: 0.3 (3), 0.0 (3), 2.1 (16), 4.5 (29)
NSW/ACT: 1.0 (6), 0.0 (6), 1.1 (7), 2.4 (16)

Arm Wrestle in QLD v WA Contest

Title holders, WA tough it out with old rivals Qld to get over the line

Team WA: 5.5 (35) def QLD: 3.4 (22)
In the second game of day 1 of the U18 Youth Girls Championships being played in Adelaide, Queensland Sunfire burst out of the centre and quickly put a score on the board.
For the next half, the contest was fierce and an arm wrestle between the midfields with neither team able to get flow into their forward 50.
Half time scores were Qld 2.2 (14) to Team WA 1.1 (7).
Team WA must have received a rev up from coach Michelle Harris during half time because they scored two quick goals in the first minutes of the third quarter.
The Black Ducks racked up three times more inside 50s than the Sunfires but could not take advantage due to the resolute defence from the Queensland backline.
The final quarter was played mainly in Queensland's forward line. WA could not get the ball past their half back line and when they finally did Sabrina Traub gained front position to bullock the ball in for a goal.
Qld could not get ahead but can be buoyed by their crisp ball handling and running in numbers.

Victoria open National Youth Girl Champs with resounding victory

VIC 12.10 (82) def SA 1.0 (6)
From the opening centre tap it was obvious the Vics wanted to leave no doubt in everyone's mind that they were focused on winning three U18 Youth Girls National Championships titles in a row.
In the first game of the first day, the SA team were rattled from the beginning and did not get into their usual attacking style of play.
The more experienced Vics were very disciplined in their approach sticking to game tactics, running hard and supporting each other.
First quarter Vics had 4 goals on the board before SA had penetrated their forward 50.
Midfielders Karyk and Blackburn were dominating, pushing Vics forward.
During the second quarter the Vics piled on another three goals despite more pressure being applied by the SA defence.
Shannon Ponter (SA) tried hard to get her team moving but they would be repelled once they made it to the centre.
Victoria continued their dominance allowing SA one scoring shot for the game which resulted in a goal.
