Vic Country/Tas clinch win

Victoria Country/Tasmania's debut at the AFL Youth National Championships started in the best...

Victoria Country/Tasmania's debut at the AFL Youth National Championships started in the best possible fashion.

Country began strongly against NSW/ACT and won every quarter on the way to an easy 10.12 (72) to 2.1 (13) victory.

Isabella Ayre, 14, bagged a match-high 4 goals while Lori Stepnell (2) and Georgia Watson were also key players in the forward half.

But it was the work of midfielders Jenna Bruton and Lily Mithen that stole the show.

Mithen racked up countless possessions to press her case for best-on-ground honours while Bruton displayed her Brett Deledio-like run and carry time and time again.

NSW/ACT never gave up and in patches showed thy could move the ball with pace.

Jodie Hicks won plenty of the ball, while ruckman Bethanie Durham an Eloise O’Brien both showed they were players to watch as the week continues.

But in the end Vic Country’s pressure around the contest proved too much.

Riley Shapter lead the way with several heavy tackles, while Maddie Smith kicked a stunning goal in the last term before backing it up with a desperate tackle minutes later.

Matches continue tomorrow at 2.00pm.

Victoria Metro has withstood a fierce challenge from Queensland to post a 46-point win on Day 1 of the AFL Youth Girls National Championships.

With 14-year-old Isabel Huntingon and co-captain Ellie Blackburn starring early, Metro bounced out to a 20-point lead at quarter time.

But when Rachel Milns goaled after some great work from Jordan Zanchetta to start the second term, Queensland were within striking distance and applying plenty of pressure.

Hannah Hillman and Tayla Harris were also fine contributors for Queensland as Vic Metro struggled to break the shackles.

As good sides do, Metro responded to the challenge and with three late goals enjoyed 34-point half time lead.

The intense contest continued in the third quarter with Huntington stating her case for best on ground with more than a dozen marks.

Rebecca Privitelli was another who shone for Vic Metro, using her agility to command plenty of the ball.

Two goals from Emily Smith were crucial, while Mia Amon bagged the first of the last term to finally put an end to Queensland’s challenge.
While the scoreline pointed to a lopsided encounter, Vic Metro finished knowing they will have to be at their best to come out on top this week.

Western Australia has sent an ominous warning to its rivals at the 2013 Youth Girls Championship in Shepparton.
WA looked a class above South Australia/Northern Territory in the first game of the carnival and put the foot down to clinch a 92-point win.

Led by four goals from agile forward Kira Phillips and four from Lara Rodin-Zimdahl, WA cruised to a 13.21 (99) to 1.1 (7) victory.

Captain Emma Swanson and lighting quick midfielder Kellie-Marie Gibson ignited WA girls early and with Phillips displaying here own turn of speed, they quickly had the ascendency on the scoreboard.

Sabrina Traub-Frederick was another to impress with athleticism and booming kick as SO/NT struggled to match the intensity of the girls from the West.

Phillips proved an ever present threat with a goal in each quarter as WA turned a 48-point half time lead into convincing final margin.

Tayla Bresland was another to provide some highlights with a spectacular mark in the third quarter and great goal in the last.

SA/NT captain Hannah Crump did her best to stem the tide at full back, while Alexandra Price was a significant contributor.

After an overwhelming response to the ‘
’ session hosted by Paul Stanley at the Southport Sharks AFL Club, AFL Gold Coast Juniors are honoured to dedicate Round 5 to the Matthew Stanley Foundation.
Paul Stanley’s 15 year old son Matthew was a victim of violence at a party in 2006 and died of his injuries the next day.
After an outpouring of grief following Matthew’s death, Paul & wife Kay Stanley formed the Matthew Stanley Foundation to reduce the likelihood of any other families having to endure their pain.
The Matthew Stanley Foundation works in conjunction with the Queensland Government to deliver the ‘
’ campaign, which includes television commercials, brochures and speaking engagements.
The presentation delivered to AFL Gold Coast Juniors is a component of this campaign.
AFL Gold Coast Juniors Club Coordinator Dean Vigus said that the session was an invaluable experience.
“Matthew was a keen young sportsman, someone both players and their parents can relate too,” Dean said.
“Having Paul Stanley deliver his story first hand meant that the message had a big impact on the juniors, hopefully what they learnt at the session will stay with them for years to come.”
During Round 5, which is the weekend of May 10-12, AFL Gold Coast Juniors from all teams will wear blue armbands to raise awareness of the ‘
’ campaign.

Round Six of the Toyota AFL Premiership season featured the ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’...

Round Six of the Toyota AFL Premiership season features the ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ campaign.
The Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ campaign aims to communicate the following key messages:

Raise awareness for the need to create a better, more positive match day environment for umpires, particularly at grassroots level where are there are issues with recruitment and retention rates of umpires.

Demonstrate to the football community that at the AFL level, umpires, players, coaches, fans, administrators and officials can work together for the good of the game to make the match day environment as inclusive and enjoyable as possible for all the participants.

Provide the AFL community with a greater understanding and appreciation for the role of umpires at all levels of our game.

Formerly AFL Umpires Manager, Jeff Gieschen’s role has expanded to National Umpires Manager and he is encouraging participants at all levels of Australia’s game to take responsibility for their behaviour on match day.
“It is our view that at the AFL level the match day environment is as good as we can recall with a healthy level of respect and professional working relationships in existence between coaches, players, umpires and officials.
“Unfortunately this appears not to be the case at some local and junior competitions and the key reason why many umpires dropout of umpiring is because of the poor match day environment and negative behaviors towards them.
“Latest statistics reveal that there are around 19,000 umpire appointments required weekly across Australia during the season, however there are only approximately11,000 accredited umpires to fill those appointments.
“Umpires get involved because they love Australia’s game, just like players, coaches, fans and we need to make the match day environment inclusive and respectful so that umpires can continue to enjoy it and retention rates improve,” said Mr Gieschen.
In recognition of the ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ campaign, at every AFL match during Round Six there will be four junior umpires dressed in their local umpiring uniform leading the AFL umpires onto the ground at the start of the match.
One of the junior umpires will hold the ball up to signify to the time keepers that the umpires have entered the arena and will also accompany an AFL senior umpire to oversee the toss of the coin.
All senior AFL coaches will shake hands with AFL umpires on field prior to the game.
A number of other activities will take place during Round Six to mark the Umpiring is Everyone’s Business campaign, supported by OPSM, the official sponsor of AFL Umpires.
Below is an umpiring promotional video which will be shown at all AFL venue scoreboards during round 6.

AFL Women's Draft - The Future Starts Now

Nominate for the AFL Women's Draft and be part of the historic first women's AFL club match

Melbourne Football Club (MFC) developed the concept and attained the AFL’s support for a female curtain raiser game on the MCG for the Women’s Week clash between Melbourne V Western Bulldogs. The MFC actively sought this home game for Women’s Round to bring to life the work they have been doing in the last four years in female participation particularly being the major sponsor of the VWFL.
All parties want to ensure that the most talented female footballers in Australia have an opportunity to start living their dreams – that of playing on the MCG and for a recognised AFL Club.
The match will take place on Saturday June 29 at 1.45pm on the MCG as the feature of Women’s Round (Round 14). For the first time teams will represent the AFL clubs and wear club guernseys.
The teams will be formed following the first ever women’s draft. Players aged 17 years and over from All-Australian teams, High Performance Academies and 2013 state teams will be invited to nominate for the draft, together with nominations received from interested parties via kicksforchicks Facebook and web applications. The Draft will take place May 15 across Australia and will be managed by the AFL.

Former Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab said before resigning that the objective was to create a major female participation initiative.
“We wanted to bring to life an idea that will showcase the best female players the game has to offer as well as sending a message to all girls that they may one day be able to play footy for their AFL team of support.
“This game is an important step towards the idea of an elite level female competition. Other sports have successfully developed elite female competitions and our sport should be no different.” said Mr Schwab.
Western Bulldogs chief executive Simon Garlick said the match was fantastic and a practical way of celebrating AFL Women’s Round.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the match and can’t wait to see the Bulldogs’ women’s representative team take to the MCG donning the red, white and blue.
“The Dogs look forward to building on the match to encourage women, especially from our diverse backyard in Melbourne’s West, to play our great sport’.”
AFL General Manager National and International Development Andrew Dillon said the match would involve more than players.
“The game will also foster the involvement female coaches, umpires, trainers and others in female football through their involvement in the game. It will be a feature of Women’s Round,” he said.
