Maher leads SEN to Cadbury AFL 9s win

Thursday, July 11, 2013

Cadbury AFL 9s continues to impress the masses on the big stage with Andy Maher and his SEN All-Stars taking to the field last Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

The team, which also included Tony Schebeci and Brett Thomas, faced up against the ‘Snakes’ - a team from the Royal Park Cadbury AFL 9s competition - in a blockbuster clash at half time of the Essendon vs Port Adelaide game.

For Maher, the host of the Morning Glory radio show on SEN and the spiritual leader of the SEN All-Stars, the concept of Cadbury AFL 9s is nothing new.

The former local football champion was a key member his side’s premiership campaign in the Vic Park Cadbury AFL 9s competition last season.

But despite his credentials, the experienced journalist was to keep his expert knowledge of the game quiet in order to avoid special attention at Etihad on Sunday.

With plenty of banter in the rooms before hand, the All-Stars and Snakes headed out at half time with plenty of pride on the line.

Galloping ruckman Schebeci got the ball rolling with a goal after a superb pass from SEN staffer Rob Eppinger.

The Snakes hit back with two quick goals and with superior run and carry appeared the team to beat.

But after a slow start, Maher moved himself in to the midfield and the tide started to turn.

A collision in a marking contest couldn’t keep him down and when the sharpshooter goaled after the siren, the SEN All-Stars had posted a hard-fought win.

Maher said he loved playing Cadbury AFL 9s and expected the game to continue to grow.

“It is a great concept and a great game. The rules make sense and while anyone can play, you still have that great feeling of using your football nouse and skills.

“The competition I played in last year was extremely well run and played in great spirits. It was fun and friendly, a great mix of a social environment but also competitive enough to have fun and try to win.”
