Vic Metro Prevail Over Country

Tuesday, May 05, 2015

VIC Metro kicked the first five and the last three goals of the game to beat Vic Country by 35 points on Day 2 of the 2015 AFL Youth Girls National Championships in Mandurah, Western Australia.

Vic Metro got off to a flying start against Vic Country with five goals to nil in the first half, but Country then hit back in style in the third term with the three unanswered goals before Metro steadied to end up prevailing 8.5 (53) to 3.0 (18).

Metro came into the clash on Tuesday having beaten Western Australia by 10 points on the opening day while Country had gone down to Queensland by 22 points on Monday.

Vic Metro got the game's first two goals in the first quarter, both inside the first seven minutes, but that was the only two scoring shots of the first quarter with each team tackling hard, and playing at a high intensity.

Country again failed to score in the second quarter and Metro was able to add another three goals for the term to hold a commanding 33-point lead at half-time with their Victorian opponents yet to score.

However, Country weren’t willing to lie down and came out inspired to make a game of it in the third quarter and kicked three quick goals in the opening four minutes courtesy of Eshe Lane, Ainslie Kemp and Teleigha Saunders.

Metro was able to stem the flow against them, though, and kicked a goal before three quarter-time through Lauren Hojnacki, and then kicked the only two of the final quarter to run out 35-point winners.

Deanna Berry, Hojnacki and Courtney Jones all kicked two goals apiece for Vic Metro while Monique Conti, Brittany Bonnici, Courtney Jones, Taylah Clayton, Deanna Berry and Lauren Szigeti were all among the better players.

As well as Lane, Kemp and Saunders kicking goals for Vic Country, Lily Mithen, Reni Hicks, Olivia Purcell, Kemp, Paris Stahl and Kim Graham were all among the best performers for their team.

Following a rest day on Wednesday, Vic Metro will take on Queensland on Thursday while Vic Country will take on Western Australia.
