VICTORIA Metro has prevailed in a thrilling Pool A grand final at the 2015 AFL Youth Girls National Championships holding on to beat Queensland by seven points on Friday at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah, Western Australia.
It turned out to be a tremendous grand final to cap off a terrific week for the Youth Girls National Championships with the two dominant teams from Pool A putting on quite a spectacle in a ferocious contest that went right down to the wire.
Vic Metro looked on top with the only three goals of the first half but Queensland then kicked the only two of the second half to be a real chance in the finish, but Vic Metro held on to win 3.4 (22) to 2.3 (15).
Earlier on Friday, WA claimed third place in Pool A by defeating Vic Country while South Australia won the Pool B grand final beating NSW/ACT. The Woomeras also claimed third place in Pool B with a win over the Thunder Devils.
Vic Metro qualified for the Pool A grand final with wins the first two days by 10 points over WA and then by 35 points over Vic Country while Queensland also defeated Vic Country by 22 points on Monday and WA by 31 points on Tuesday.
The two teams then had a grand final preview on Thursday with Vic Metro winning by 17 points, but it was a much different story in the grand final.
Despite Vic Metro leading 3.1 to nothing at half-time thanks to goals to Sarah Dargan, Prudence Cordes and Mia Amon, they were certainly made to earn their victory after half-time.
Goals to Jade Ransfield in the third quarter and then Tashina Ketchup in the last brought the game to life and Queensland trailed by just the one straight kick. They continued to press hard, but Vic Metro just did enough to hold on in the finish.
Vic Metro's best players in the grand final were Brittany Bonnici, Monique Conti, Jordyn Allen, Katherine Smith, Georgia Fisher and Taylah Clayton.
Queensland's best players included Tayla Harris, Tahlia Randall, Gaby Collingwood, Elisha King and Jade Ransfield.
