AFL is establishing footholds in South America. The Los Santos Saints in Santiago has 20 Australian expats and 20 Chileans who train and play a scratch match every weekend.
"We play a full game once a month, mostly amongst ourselves but we also try and play a Buenos Aires team and a Rio team once a year," Australian expat Colin Phillips said.
The Saints are also active in the community. They recently held a fundraiser match to assist a school in Conception (located 600kms south of Santiago) that was damaged by an earthquake that struck earlier this year.
The match between Australia v Rest of the World was attended by 300 people and raised $5000.
The day included a clinic for 25 children and a barbeque.
Appropriately a guernsey signed by Saint Leigh Montagna was auctioned.
