Understanding Umpiring

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

On the weekend of May 13th to 15th, the SANFL Umpiring Department held a successful ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ promotion as part of AFL Umpire Appreciation round.

SANFL club senior coaches, captains and players along with the coach and members of the SA U18 team joined Green Shirt umpires from the Junior District Leagues and umpired junior football matches.

The concept was to promote umpiring within junior football and to ensure people support umpires and create positive environment for umpires within the game.  Those taking part also gained a greater awareness and appreciation for the challenge umpiring presents.

As the coaches of West, Port & Norwood were not available on this weekend they will have the opportunity to umpire some junior football in the near future.

Feedback from all junior clubs and parents who attended the football was extremely positive. The football players and coaches enjoyed their involvement and the experience.

State Umpiring Manager Shane Harris said the day was a success.

"It was fantastic to have the clubs involved in promoting what is a very important message - that all players and supporters should respect the role of umpires at all levels of the game," he said.

The SANFL Umpiring Department will continue to encourage players and coaches to give umpiring a go in future seasons to continue to develop awareness and understanding for the role of the umpire.
