Wednesday, May 16, 2012

South East Juniors (SEJ) has announced the appointment of former AFL Umpire Darren Goldspink to the position of Umpires Manager.

Goldspink, who umpired in six AFL Grand Finals from 1993 to 2006, will head up the South East Juniors Umpiring Department after the position became vacant late last week.

SEJ General Manager Shaun Connell said the league is pleased to appoint someone with such vast experience to the role.

"We're excited about the appointment of Darren, and look forward to working with him to continue the development of Umpiring in the South East Juniors.

"There has been some massive inroads made with umpiring over the last six months and we are confident that Darrenís appointment will further enhance the programs that our league is currently running."

Goldspink began umpiring the AFL in 1989 and went on to umpire 371 AFL games, 37 finals and 6 Grand Finals. Darren retired in from AFL Umpiring in 2008 due to injury.

He is looking forward to this new challenge with the South East Juniors.

"Iím excited to get back into umpiring and give something back to junior umpiring," he said."

"South East Juniors Umpiring is a strong group and I look forward to working with the SEJ and AFL Victoria to develop and nurture umpiring in the league."

Goldspink will commence his role with the SEJ immediately.
