Brett Burton Joins Laws Committee

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

AFL General Manager Football Operations Adrian Anderson today announced that former Adelaide Crows player Brett Burton would join the AFL's Laws of the Game Committee.

Mr Anderson said Burton, who now works at the Brisbane Lions as the club’s Physical Performance Manager, would replace Matthew Pavlich, who will be stepping down this season after four years in the role due to increasing study and business commitments outside his playing role as Fremantle captain.

"As chairman of the Laws Committee and on behalf of the AFL, I would like to thank Matthew for his contribution over the past four years, and to wish him continued success on the field.

"I am delighted that Brett will join the Laws panel, after a distinguished recent playing career with the Crows and a continued involvement in the game now with the Lions,” he said.

Burton played 177 games with the Crows between 1999-2010, kicking 264 goals, and was club leading goalscorer in 2002 and 2008, as well as serving as an AFLPA delegate from 2000-05, on the AFLPA executive from 2005-09 and as AFLPA President in his final playing year in 2010.

"Brett had a very fine career with the Crows and, as a recently retired player, remains strongly involved in the game as a key member of Brisbane’s football department," Mr Anderson said.

Mr Anderson said the AFL has begun the process of meeting with the 18 clubs to outline the 2012 Laws of the Game process.

"The AFL is now seeking feedback on topics the AFL clubs, State leagues, Players and Coaches would like to raise for discussion as part of feedback on the game," Mr Anderson said.

There were no rule changes for the 2012 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, following at excellent season of football in 2011.

The AFL Commission accepted a recommendation from the Laws of the Game Committee for this year that the interchange rule and advantage rule should remain unchanged from the 2011 season, to allow them to continue to bed down in the game.

The Laws Committee going forward will comprise; Adrian Anderson (chairman), Kevin Bartlett, Joel Bowden, Brett Burton, Leigh Matthews, Luke Power, Rowan Sawers and Michael Sexton.
