Approximately 200 guests from across South Australia gathered in the Magarey Room at AAMI Stadium for the 2012 “Green Shirt Day”. This was a representation of many Green Shirt umpires, their Mentors, umpiring panel Coaches and Administrators and parents of young umpires who had provided important support to their children in embarking on an umpiring career.
The day was hosted by SANFL Umpiring Services Manager, Barry Oates with the Official Welcome conducted by SANFL State Umpiring Manager, Shane Harris.
Shane’s welcome focussed on the opportunities umpiring can create. As a career path to the elite AFL level but also at a personal level where skills and qualities can be developed in leadership, decision making and self- confidence. Not to mention the ability to earn some money for your efforts.
A Certificate of Recognition and a gift from the AFL were presented individually to the many Green Shirt Umpires, Mentors and Panel Coaches and Administrators in attendance.
During the course of the presentation short interviews were conducted with some of the award recipients. It was common theme that the enjoyment of being involved in umpiring and the game is what has many participating in their particular roles and for mentors and coaches the opportunity to support and nurture the young umpires coming through as they commence their careers.
A special acknowledgement was made to 3 students from Multicultural Youth SA who have commenced a career in umpiring. These students have moved to Australia from Africa, Afghanistan and Sudan and display a passion for Australian Football and in particular umpiring. Their enthusiasm will take them a long way. SANFL Inclusive Programs Manager, Peter Cates spoke on behalf of these students and it hoped that this may become a future recruiting area.
Young Reggie German was acknowledged as the SA Umpire for Auskick matches at the AFL Grand Final and his mentor/coach Ray Austin spoke on behalf of Reggie and gave an outline of his umpiring career to date.
The Awards Day concluded with the serving of light refreshments and the opportunity for all in attendance to stay to watch the SANFL Preliminary Final between North Adelaide and West Adelaide.
