2010 State Volunteer of the Year – Maureen Gathercole (WA)

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Maureen Gathercole is one of the seven volunteers to be named as a 2010 State Volunteer of the Year.

Over 120,000 volunteers help service Australian Football at all levels and the Australian Football League are forever grateful for the sacrifices Maureen and other volunteers make to continue supporting the game.

The 2010 State Volunteers of the Year winners were rewarded with a trip of a lifetime to the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final.  The trip included:

  • Two return airfares to Melbourne (except Victoria)
  • Three nights’ accommodation at the Sofitel Melbourne (including breakfast)
  • Two tickets to the AFL Official Function at the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final
  • The opportunity to walk in the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade
  • The opportunity to attend a morning tea in the AFL Media Centre with several AFL identities to discuss issues being faced within community football.

Maureen had a great time in Melbourne and offered the following when asked about her weekend.

"I had an amazing weekend. Our room at the Sofitel looked right across to the MCG and we spent much of our little spare time admiring the view. Then David Parkin, who is a friend of a Past East Fremantle President made some very pleasing remarks about some of the work I am doing, then the Parade and so many East Fremantle people in the crowd. However the trip was made all the more special when we discovered we were to be joined (at the AFL Official Function at the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final) by Ron Barassi, Bob Skilton, Wayne Bradshaw and the McHales."

Maureen Gathercole’s Volunteer Profile

Maureen Gathercole simply does everything ... and even that is underestimating the role that she plays at the East Fremantle Football Club.  If there was a Hall of Fame for Volunteers then Maureen would be one of the first inducted and then elevated to Legend Status. Maureen has volunteered her services, time, expertise and caring nature to the club for 30 years.
