SA School Coaches Love the Piloted Coach Education Session

Friday, June 13, 2014

The SANFL identified the need to provide more coach education to school coaches so they recently piloted a coach education session solely for school coaches. Over 40 school coaches registered for the event and all walked away extremely impressed.

The session, which focused on providing best practice in conducting a training session, was conducted by two experts of this field Nik Hagicostas and Shane Pill. Nik is the current Fitness Coach at North Adelaide Football Club and is an expert in sport science. Nik has previously worked for the Sydney Swans, Socceroos, Adelaide 36ers, Adelaide United and the Australian track and field team. Shane is the Senior Lecturer in Sport and Physical Education at Flinders University, current reserves coach at the West Adelaide FC and Author of Play with Purpose: Developing Game Sense in AFL Footballers.

This practical education session looked at what a warm up should look like as well as looking at training session activities. It focused on maximising player involvement, optimal challenge for players, guided discovery, simplicity to complexity and technical skill components.

The SANFL received terrific feedback from the session and will continue to explore coach education opportunities in the near future.
