Friday, April 23, 2010

Roger became a volunteer in Australian Football in the early 1970’s at the Howrah Junior Football Club as the club Secretary and then President for six years.

He was instrumental in influencing a merger between two local junior football clubs (Bellerive Bombers and Howrah Roos) into the Clarence District Junior Football Club.

He was the umpires coordinator for junior football in Southern Tasmania for a number of years.

Roger went on and became President of the Eastern Shore Junior Football Association and under his leadership he championed the introduction of modified rules and then the amalgamation of Eastern Shore Junior Football Association with the Sandy Bay Football Association.

Several years later led the move to draw together all junior football associations in Southern Tasmania into one entity; the Southern Tasmania Junior Football League (STJFL). Roger was the inaugural President of the STJFL and served in that position for three years.

He then joined the Board of Clarence District Football Club (CDFC) as the clubs Director of Junior Football and then Director of Football and Chairman of Selectors. During this period the CDFC won 14 of a possible 20 premierships at either senior, reserves, under 19 or under 17 levels.

He became Vice President of the Southern Football League (SFL) under Will Hodgman’s Chairmanship (current leader of the Liberal Party in Tasmania) then replaced Will as President of the SFL for a five year period.

As President of the SFL Roger was instrumental in the SFL signing an affiliation agreement with AFL TAS and leading it from an organization with debt to within a couple of years being a strong and vibrant competition with money in the bank.

Roger was appointed Chairman of AFL Southern Tasmania for three years until stepping down in 2008.

Roger was recently elected as Director of Football at the developing Lauderdale Football Club in late for the 2009 season.
