U16's celebrate Indigenous Round

Monday, June 03, 2013

Indigenous players were recognised across the TAC Cup and Peter Jackson VFL as part of the Round for their contribution to the great game of Australian football.

As part of a curtain raiser game to the Collingwood versus Essendon VFL clash, a growing number of new cultures and backgrounds were also highlighted as the Under 16 Indigenous KickStart side faced the Under 16 Ahmed Saad Multicultural Squad in the first of two clashes between the two sides. The second match between these two sides will be as part of Multicultural Round in week two of the Round 13 fixture in the VFL.

The theme ‘Identity’ was used as part of this year’s Indigenous Round, focusing on the heritage, community involvement and acceptance. The theme, and having the Under 16’s game played at Victoria Park, was of extra significance this year due to the 20th anniversary of the game at the very ground where Nicky Winmar lifted his Guernsey and pointed to his skin. This is the single most powerful statement of Aboriginal identity in the history of the game. As part of sharing their backgrounds, players from both Under 16 teams reenacted the significant reflection of Identity that Winmar showed at the ground.

The match between the two squads highlighted plenty of talent from both sides, with the Ahmed Saad Squad taking the advantage early, and did not let the KickStart team back into the game. Details of the game are below.
As part of the morning, ABC local radio’s Coodabeen Champions broadcast from the game, with AFL Victoria’s Kashif Bouns and Peter Dye featuring as guests, as well as a number of other AFL Victoria staff members.
