Coach is the Key to Club’s Female Success

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Sherryn Kilmiester believes the coach is the key to ensuring a club’s female teams are successful. “Our coach is always providing rewards to the girls and encouraging them,” she said. “If the girls get welcomed with open arms and the club treats them as they would their top male side (with respect and dignity) then the club benefits,” Killmiester added.

“A lot of our male player’s partners wanted to play so our girls team developed from there.”

Killmiester believes there have been many pluses having the girls at the club but none more so than the assistance they’ve given the Waratah Auskick programme. With 35 registered players the women’s team have provided many coaches to help the young players develop their skills and enjoyment of AFL.

“The other big positive has been the greater social interaction at the club,” said Killmiester. “All our social events are for both genders and the occasional training session too.”

ABC journalist, Charlie King, instigated the women’s team coaching the girls in their inaugural season before work commitments got in the way.

The Waratahs have been successful on field too with premierships in 06/07, 11/12 and 12/13, plus several minor premierships along the way!  Not bad for a club that only originated in 05/06! Being competitive so often is testament to the standard of coaching the girls are exposed to. Clearly they have an appetite for success and develop their skills at a standard to be the best in the competition.

Individuals have also attained recognition for their skills with the League’s leading goal kicker in 12/13 Abbey Holmes, runner up Fairest and Best Lisa Roberts who also won the Best o Ground in the Grand Final. The 2011/2012 season proved just as remarkable with the League’s Best and Fairest Stephanie James, Leading goal kicker Casey Jess, Best of Ground in the Grand Final Colleen Gwynne, and Rising Star Brittany Able.

So if you live in Darwin and fancy learning the game under the eyes of some excellent coaches then Waratahs you’re team!
