Southern Power Set to Have Teams in All Age Groups

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

It’s a tough gig to establish AFL in the non traditional state of NSW but Southern Power have been very successful in building their boys and girls team in Sydney. Through perseverance and the favoured recruiting strategy of ‘word of mouth’ Power intend to complete the player pathway for their girls by introducing a youth girls (Under 18) team in 2014. Based at Gwawley Oval in Taren Point, the Sydney based club believe having the girls around has strengthened the club’s stability and depth.

“The girls have provided integration to the club by taking active roles in the committee, social functions, game day duties and administration,” said Club contact Lauren Hodgson. “In return the boys are really patient and generous with the new girls, as well as helping them toughen the intensity of each training session, “ Hodgson added.

“Power introduced girls teams in 2010 and we’ve seen nothing but improvements to the club. We have a supportive committee who incorporated a strong team of female players in the decision making to help develop action items.”

Hodgson told of how the club obtained local school contacts and met with them so they could put a local name and face to the club. “It is a difficult environment to infiltrate however persistence and putting local names to faces does help in establishing that relationship that’s vital if you want your club promoted,” Hodgson suggested.

So if you’re in the Sydney Harbour area you can expect to play AFL from the age of 5 years through to senior age groups whether you’re a girl or boy. All under the proud Southern Power banner!
