Vic Metro hold off WA in Grand Final Rematch

Monday, May 05, 2014

A pack-style of football was the theme of the match in last year’s Grand Final rematch between Vic Metro and Western Australia, with Vic Metro running away victorious 4.4 (28) to 3.5 (23) in a heart stopping finish.

A great contested mark by Isabel Huntington with only ten seconds to go stopped WA from stealing the match in a tight finish.

Vic Metro’s Lauren Hojnacki, Beaconsfield, booted the first major of the match running into the forward 50 to boot a big goal from almost 30 metres out on a slight angle.

This was the only major of the first term, with Western Australia missing two opportunities to score and tight defensive lines for both sides making it difficult to convert.

The second quarter proved another tight contest, with both sides going hard at the football.

Western Australia had plenty of opportunities early in the third quarter, with the ball not leaving their forward half for the first five minutes of play.

It took until they were deep in red time to finally convert, with a spectacular shot on goal by Asha Price putting WA within just four points to set up an interesting final term.

Victoria Metro’s Georgie Gee opened the final term with an impressive goal under pressure to extend the lead out to 10 points.

Asha Price got the quick reply, and put WA within four points with only minutes to go.

Vic Metro flooded their defence with the clock ticking down, and a long kick into Western Australia’s forward fifty caused the entire crown to hold their breath. Huntington stood tall however, and sealed the win for Vic Metro.
