Woomeras Win Inaugural Match in Youth Girls Champs

Monday, May 05, 2014

A fast-paced, physical encounter from the outset, the Woomeras made a flourishing debut into the Youth Girls Championships, losing the lead just once in the four quarters in their 11 point win over the combined NT and Tasmania side.

Desiree Atkinson scored the first goal for the Woomeras after a tightly contested start to the first term. Courtney Hodder followed this up shortly after, with the Woomeras dominating possession for the majority of the quarter and going into quarter time with an 18 point lead after a successful free kick attempt on goal from Shaliese Fisher.

The Thunder Devils regained their composure to help Maddison Smith register the first major for the Thunder Devils almost immediately after the first break. Tanisha Garling followed up with another quick goal to close the gap even further.

The Woomeras went into half-time with a five point lead, with the third quarter proving to be a grinding low-scoring affair, with just two behinds registering on the scoreboard for the Thunder Devils. Courtney Hodder put in a dynamic performance in the midfield for the Woomeras but couldn’t get through the determined defence from the Thunder Devils.

Maddison Smith scored the first goal of the last quarter, quickly followed up by teammate Courtney Webb to take the Thunder Devils into the lead for the first time in the match.

A spectacular attempt on goal resulted in a successful free kick for Fisher, which took the Woomeras back in to the lead with just minutes to go. She followed this up with a goal on the siren to seal the game for the tournament debutants.
