Devils too Slick for SA

Thursday, May 08, 2014

An outstanding game from Ponter, who lead from the midfield, was the catalyst for a convincing 19 point win by the Thunder Devils over South Australia in the tenth match of the championship tournament.

South Australia took advantage of a lapse in defence after the opening bounce, with Ebony Marinoff scoring the first goal of the match. The Thunder Devils regained composure to obtain some possession and were rewarded with a goal minutes later. The Thunder Devils followed up with another goal shortly after but SA were keen to make amends, piling on another goal and three behinds.

After quarter time, the Thunder Devils were aggressive at the restart but inaccuracy cost them several times until Ponter made the breakthrough to earn them the lead.

SA were unable to respond and were behind 16-30 at the long break.

SA started the third quarter with gusto,  with impressive performer Sarah Allen scoring a goal within the first minute of the third quarter.

An extraordinary goal from Reharnee Heenan for the Thunder Devils stretched the lead to 14 points halfway through the third term.

Megan Allen goaled for SA with two minutes to go in the third. Megan, who is one of three Allan sisters in the side, made an important contribution – following up with another goal a minute before three-quarter time to level the scores at 36 apiece.

The final quarter saw Shae Gundlach regain the lead for SA, with the Thunder Devils trailing by 5 with ten minutes to go.

The Thunder devils were quick to turn the game around, with Ponter and Tia Patterson scoring two goals in quick succession.

A regulation mark from South Australia’s Taylah Eastwoord inside fifty couldn't be converted into a major, and SA were well behind with two minutes remaining.

The Thunder continued to pile on the pain, with Maddi Smith adding another goal from inside the goal square with a minute to go, making the final result a certainty.
