Clubs and Communities

Clubs involved in the Club Partnership Program include:

  • Essendon has a partnership with Wadeye and the Tiwi Islands
  • Geelong has a partnership with Groote Island and Gove
  • Adelaide has a partnership with the APY Lands
  • Hawthorn has a partnership with Katherine
  • Richmond has a partnership with Alice Springs and Tennant Creek
  • Port Adelaide has a partnership with Ceduna

AFL Clubs partner with Indigenous communities and, in conjunction with local schools and community organisations, engage young people in school and sporting activities.

Each Club involved has established a Flying Squad to visit the community up to three times per year. The squad consists of players and coaching staff who deliver football activities for children (boys and girls) and adult members of the community.

They also act as advocates and mentors to compliment the work already undertaken by the community police, health, education and sport & recreation organisations.

The AFL Club Flying Squad members conduct a range of activities including:

  • Gettting parents and community elders involved in the program
  • Conducting school coaching clinics (after and/or in school time)
  • Delivering healthy lifestyle and nutrition information
  • Conducting training camps as recognition for good results and improvement in results (linked to school attendance and grades)
  • Assisting teachers to deliver class curriculum themed on AFL
  • Reading to children in class
  • Delivering practical coaching courses for community coaches
  • Attending special community events
